Connecting the Dots

UPDATED: David Mack and Joe Quesada’s Indigenous character was introduced as a supporting character in Daredevil #9 (1999). As one of the few deaf characters, she often served as the counterpoint to Daredevil. She possesses photographic reflexes, similar to the Taskmaster. Maya Lopez debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series Hawkeye portrayed by Alaqua Cox and all episodes of her own five-episode show drop Tuesday on Disney+.

Many were first introduced to the character outside of the Daredevil title when she appeared as the first Ronin in The New Avengers #11 (2005).  As the adopted daughter of the Kingpin, who killed her father Crazy Horse, she has been connected to a number of Marvel characters and storylines, including Secret Invasion. Most recently, she has become the new host of the Phoenix Force.

She has a few key issues that remain largely undervalued, which include:

Daredevil vol. 2 #9 (1st appearance)

Daredevil vol. 2 #10 (1st cover appearance, 1st William Lincoln, Crazy Horse in Flashback)

Daredevil vol. 2 #11 (1st appearance as Echo)

Daredevil vol. 2 #15 (Echo blinds Kingpin)

New Avengers #11 (1st appearance of Ronin)

New Avengers #13 (Echo revealed as Ronin)

Moon Knight vol. 5 #2 (Echo undercover as a stripper)

Daredevil vol. 2 #51 (Origin of Echo – Part 1, 1st “Rez”)

Daredevil vol. 2 #52 (Origin of Echo – Part 2, 1st mother)

Daredevil vol. 2 #53 (1st Chief)

Daredevil vol. 2 #54 (Vison Quest, Wolverine Appearance)

Marvel Voices Indigenous Voices #1 (First Echo Solo Story)

Daredevil Annual #1 (Echo resurrected, first Eric)

Avengers vol. 7 #44 (Echo becomes Thunderbird)

Echo’s origin does dominate Daredevil #51-55, she has yet to receive her own title. As a perennial supporting character, Echo has only recently received the spotlight in Marvel Voices Indigenous Voices #1 (2021). With her own show and the rising popularity of the character, one might expect that she will get a shot at her own title. Whether they keep her as a cosmic character or return her to her street-level roots remains to be seen.
